I really am. I don't know how many people around here follow international politics. The Netherlands voted today. Almost 15% of the Dutch people voted for Geert Wilders and the PVV and I am scared.

I am frightened by him. Geert Wilders is intelligent, idealistic, charismatic, racist and not scared to use every dirty trick in the book and a couple of new ones. He uses tactics that I have come to associate with Adolf Hitler in the early 1930's.

Geert Wilders targets the Islam, and paints it like the Islamic religion in itself is a source of evil. He makes it seem like all Muslims are terrorists or criminals, like the crisis is their fault and like the Dutch culture is being ruined or at the very least threatened by each and every Muslim living in this country. He makes it seem like violence is the answer. He makes it seem justified to discriminate against Muslim people or even to use violence in whatever form against them. He is ruthless, racist and seemingly without empathy.

This is a man that blames the economic crisis on a group of people, based on their religion. He uses people's fears and worries and does not only use them, but also actively works to enlarge them. He makes Muslims the scapegoats of society, and nevermind the effects of his actions on thousands of lifes of people, people my age, whose grandparents came here and who have never known anything but the Netherlands, but have now firmly been labled 'foreigners'.

Yes, I am scared. I am scared because this is a freightning man, but I am even more scared because 3 in every 20 people think he is right. I am terrified by that but I am also very, very disappointed in my country.

What also scares me is that in the future, people will associate me with hate for Muslims on account of my being from the country where this man became so big. I am scared that people will only see those 15% who are in their own right extremist, and forget that more than half of the people actively did NOT vote for Wilders. You might think it's a far fear, but isn't that exactly what Geert Wilders has done for the Muslims? He's taken a minority and made it the prime example of what all Muslims are like.

I am scared.

Dear one, I would never associate you with a politician just because he was in charge of your nation's government. We have had our share of that over here as well, with President Shrub.

*hugs you lots* I know dear, I know. And I know that the people here on LJ will. It's the general opinion that I'm worried about.

What I'm most worried about though, is the opinion and treatment of anyone who dared to identify as Muslim in our own country. A country where for years, we were proud to be tolerant, we were proud not to judge. Now though...

If Wilders is going to be in the government, it's like a green light to any racist to do as he pleases and that scares the crab out of me. I'm a white girl with blonde hair and I wouldn't be the one being judged. It still scared me. I can't even imagine how many Muslim people have to feel.

Not to belittle this, but now you know how I feel when I'm grouped with the negative stereotype of Americans. I never voted for Bush, but it seemed like other countries just assumed that being American meant agreeing with our gov't and its policies under him. And our nation has been about 50 / 50 on that, so never even a vast majority.

I'm sorry to hear that you might have to go through the same thing though. I'm also sorry and worried as well to hear that someone in power has such a hatred of a group of people. I hope that in the future racism will be taboo worldwide, as farfetched as that might sound.

Don't panic though. Things are always changing.

*hugs*

I know... And I already had a fairly good idea. It's awful and although a night's sleep brought some perspective, it's also brought an even higher percentage of votes for PVV and VVD, the two right wing parties. It's brought a larger chance of a right-wing coalition that I do not agree with in the slightest. I hate that. I'm very much a left-wing girl and I wish the crisis would be solved in a way that actually conductive to a steady, livable future in which kids can get quality education, a semblance of nature, and respect for people, no matter their colour, religion, orientation, views etc. That kind of thing.

The icon says it all really.

Scary that the 15% do not realize the extremely close parallels to the Nazi party. Still, in all, most of your countrymen ARE sane. Just as you would never judge an entire ethic or religious group by the actions of a few zealots, most people will not judge you by the votes of a few of your countrymen.

There's a saying - not sure if it has crossed the pond - The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Those that speak the loudest get the attention.

In your case 85% off all Dutch aren't listening to the noise.

You may be scared but those who should be terrified are those of Middle Eastern decent - or anyone who could be mistaken for Middle Eastern. After 911, it was a dangerous time to be of Middle Eastern decent in the US. Fear is a powerful motivator. Keep your chin up. Radicals usually stir things up for awhile and then fade away when they begin to bore everyone with their rhetoric.

That's what I'm scared for... It's not so much that I'm scared for myself, or that I'm scared something will happen to me personally.

I'm not happy with the way my country has chosen for many reasons. The way it looks now we might be getting a very right wing government that might have a few good ideas but all in all saves money on all the wrong things and invests in even wronger ones. Let's give money to the army and the banks, let's leave the richer population alone and let's take it away from education, the health system, nature... That's what the big winners advocate. I'm a left-wing voter and thinker, always have been. Apparently only a small part of my fellow voters are. This saddens me. Really, my icon says it all.

If a political leader, a minister or vice prime minister is sprouting that kind of bull crab, Muslims all over the word have every right to be furious... Even if only 15% of those who voted voted for him.

My mom's (joking) assessment this morning hit me in the gut; 'Shall we imigrate?' It was a joke and she wouldn't ever because she couldn't leave her parents and my fosterbrothers and really, this country in general, but... Neither of us want to be associated with the government as its shaping up to be.

Here I am hoping your elections won't be a harbinger of ours this weekend. I don't need the Belgian racist, nazi party to gain this much support but I fear for it. They have been gaining more support with each elections and are steadily growing.

Let's hope neither of them actually gets into the governing of our countries. May the other parties exclude them from gaining some real power!

I would never judge you by who your country's politics ... and you know I am Muslim as well.

*HUGS YOU TIGHT* - I am sure the majority of your countrymen from the polls you quoted, are as tolerant as ever. *more hugs*

Thank you dear :) Thing is, it's not just any poll, it's the elections of our government... Ah man, no sense in getting worked up about it. What's done is done and let's hope the best of it.
